Rutherford and Appleton – People

Celebrate the achievements of people both past and present from all walks of life, and their contributions towards advancing Science. Pictured here are physicists Ernest Rutherford (left) Edward Appleton (right) for whom the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) is named. Rutherford was a pioneer of nuclear and atomic physics with the famous ‘Rutherford scattering experiment’ and the ‘Chemistry of radioactivity’ for which he won a Nobel Prize. Appleton was similarly awarded the Nobel Prize for his ‘investigations of the physics of the upper atmosphere’ and confirmation of the existence of the ‘ionosphere’.
